Baseball: La Roche Sweeps Titans in Non-Conference DH

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Westminster College baseball team was swept by La Roche on Sunday as it lost 5-0 in game one and 6-4 in the nightcap. Westminster dropped to 7-5 overall, while La Roche improved to 10-3 on the season.
In game one, La Roche scored one run in the second inning, three in the third and one in the fifth. The Redhawks' three runs in the third inning were all unearned as they resulted from three Titan errors. For the game, La Roche out-hit Westminster 6-2. The Titans had five runners left on base, while the Redhawks had four.
Titan junior Ron Sullivan (Boardman, OH / Canfield) (1-2), pitched a complete game in the loss. In six innings, Sullivan gave up five runs (two earned) off six hits. He struck out one batter and walked the same.
In the nightcap, La Roche got on the scoreboard first after an RBI-double in the bottom of the first inning. Westminster tied the game at 1-1 after an RBI-single from senior Dom Neely (Prospect, PA / Slippery Rock), scoring Dunn.
The Redhawks pulled away after a three-run third inning. La Roche connected on back-to-back-to-back RBI with two outs.
Westminster threatened in the top of the fourth inning, with two more runs courtesy of an RBI from sophomore Jared Heck (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) and freshman Ryan Dunn (Freeport, PA / Freeport), making the score 4-3. The Redhawks added two more runs in the sixth inning to go up 6-3.
In the seventh inning, while down 6-4, the Titans had the tying run at the plate with a runner on second base with only one out. Westminster, however, was unable to score.
Titan senior pitcher Scott Hanicak (Ellwood City, PA / Laurel) (2-1) went 4.0 innings and gave up four runs off nine hits. Hanicak walked one batter.
The Titans are back in action on Tuesday when they play Mount Union at Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio in a doubleheader. The first pitch for game one is slated for 1 p.m.
