Is texting in class an unclassy act?

Abstract:

Texting during class is happening at Westminster and some instructors are addressing it in class syllabi.

"Texting in class will not be tolerated. If I do find someone texting (writing OR reading texts, OR surfing the web, etc.) during class time, I reserve the right to collect all phones before subsequent classes and returning them to you at the end of class." --PS 102/American Government Syllabus with Dr. Ed Cohen, Spring 2010.

Is it okay to text in class?

At Westminster College, there are no formal rules on cell phones and texting in classes. Walk around the Tub and you can quickly see students typing away at their cell phone keys. Texting is clearly an integral part of communication for many on our campus.

WCN's Lee Biermeyer took our camera out to talk to Westminster students, faculty and administrators to get a sense of how the texting and cell phone conflict is playing out on our campus.

Silent texting should not be a distraction. The instructors should look at these children as adults and not care if their grade dwindels. I personally do not text during class because I feel it is disrespectful to the instructor. However, I've never been distracted by someone else texting.

I do not text in class because I feel it is extremely disrespectful to professors and/or other speakers that may be presenting during a scheduled class period. I also feel that it is extremely distracting whenever I have to hear/feel a phone vibrate somewhere around me every six minutes...

Although I understand an instructor's desire to ban texting from their classroom, I agree with Aquatix... The students on this campus are all adults. They are responsible for their actions. If they want to be distracted in class, miss valuable information and receive poor grades, let them do so... They aren't wasting my tuition money, the instructor is still getting paid for their time in class, and these students are giving me (as well as others) an advantage in the job market outside of the "Westminster Bubble."

We are all adults and a teacher should not be allowed to confiscate anyone's phone or deduct points. Yes, there are some people who need to take a course on texting etiquette, but the bottom line is we are paying to be here and be in those classes. Really though, we are paying how much to go here...if I want to use my phone...I'm going to use my phone.

Text Away!

I agree 100% with TacoNight Pringles.. we are adults now and are paying some $36,000 a year to go here! Texting does not happen every second of the class and if something comes up that cannot wait until after class texting is the way to fix that problem without worrying about phone calls.. this is our life and if we chose not to pay attention for a second to send or read a text then that is our problem not the professors.. grades dropping will and have never been a result from texting in class, but the lack of studying and reading for that subject. This place is already like a high school enough don't make it worse!

Our Tuition Is A RIP OFF

I completely agree with the comments above. It's bad enough we pay upwards of $35K to go to this school and have to deal with constant inadequacies in technology, over priced food, public safety locking us out of necessary study areas early in the night of a college student, etc. If I have my phone out in class to check for texts from my job (which at my wage, I'll be able to pay off my student loans I've racked up here by the time I'm 90) or see that I have missed calls from potential employers then so be it. This isn't high school. There's no taxpayer money paying for my education. As long as my parents and I are paying this outrageous tuition then I will do what I find is tasteful. At the end of the day my profs are still cashing a big paycheck.
