Men's Basketball: Titans Win over W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster senior Doug Smith (South Park, PA / South Park) scored a game-high 24 points as the Titans won, 86-79, over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Washington & Jefferson Saturday inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.


The Titans improved to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the PAC, while the Presidents dropped to 7-11 overall and 5-4 in the conference.


In the first half, tied 23-23 with 9:06 on the clock, Westminster orchestrated a 19-8 run to lead 42-31 with 4:38 remaining in the half. The Titans led 53-41 at intermission.


The Presidents battled back and tied the game at 61 after a 20-8 run in the second half at the 10:53 mark. W&J took a 65-63 lead, however a three-pointer from freshman Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) put Westminster back in front at 66-65 with 9:39 remaining. Senior Reuben King (Tarentum, PA / Highlands) earned the assist. The Titans maintained the lead for the rest of regulation.


The Titans shot 78.8% (26-for-33) from the free throw line, led by Smith (10-for-11).


Also scoring in double-digits for Westminster were Carswell, junior Anthony Thomas (New Castle, PA / Union), and senior Ron Martino (Youngstown, OH / Cardinal Mooney) with 15, 14, and 11 points respectively. Carswell also grabbed down a game-high 11 rebounds. Smith and senior Adam Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) followed with nine and seven rebounds, respectively.


 The Titans are back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Thiel at 8 p.m.
