NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men’s lacrosse team won, 16-13, at home against Franciscan University on Saturday.
Titan freshman Adrian Culp (Gaithersburg, MD / Quince Orchard) and sophomore Ryan Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park) each earned a team-high five points. Culp scored a team- and career-high five goals, while Shorts registered a game-high three assists, to go along with two goals. Sophomore Luke Ostoyic (Kentson, OH / Kenston) tallied a career-high four points, including two goals and two assists.
Westminster outshot Franciscan 76-39 (31-26 on goal) and held a 51-35 advantage in groundballs. Freshman Chris Ryczaj (Pittsburgh, PA / Central Catholic) earned a game-high 15 groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper Carter Hall (Zeeland, MI / Zeeland West) had 13 saves in a complete-game effort.
The Titans improved to 2-2 overall, while the Barons dropped to 2-1.
Culp scored the first goal with 11:27 remaining in the first quarter. Franciscan’s Michael Araps tied the game with a goal at the 7:54 mark. Westminster took a 4-1 lead, following three-straight goals; freshman Chris Slater (Pittsburgh, PA / Central Catholic) (4:31), Shorts (3:16), and Culp (:50) registered the goals. In the second quarter, each of Franciscan’s goals were matched by Westminster; Ostoyic (10:21), freshman Tyler Nordby (Burnt Hills, NY / Burnt Hills) (7:40), and Slater (3:24) scored the matching goals, while Ostoyic added another with 55 seconds remaining in the half. Westminster led 8-4 at intermission. The Barons outscored the Titans 5-3 in the third and trailed 11-9; freshman Dante Serra (Center Valley, PA / Southern Lehigh) (13:24) and Culp (8:01, 0:17) tallied the three Titans goals. In the final quarter, Franciscan cut the Titans’ lead to 11-0 after Paul Modzelewski scored with 10:19 on the clock. Westminster answered with two consecutive goals, courtesy of junior Danny Mercer (Seven Fields, PA / Seneca Valley) (9:40) and sophomore Alex Kennedy (Moon Township, PA / Moon Area) (8:26), and led 13-10 with 8:26 to play. Westminster answered the next two Franciscan goals with a goal of its own (Culp/7:24 and Serra/4:06) and led 15-12 with 4:06 remaining. Shorts added another goal with 2:34 on the clock and Franciscan’s Dan McCartney tallied the final score of the game with 18 seconds left.
Westminster will next host Mount St. Joseph University for its Ohio River Lacrosse Conference season-opener on Saturday, March 25 at 12 p.m.
