NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.-- Impressive exhibits and displays on the history of guitars, fashion and the whooping cough vaccine towered over the middle and high school presenters competing at the National History Day (NHD) competition held at Westminster College on Thursday.
The regional competition brought nearly 30 students together to showcase historical papers, documentaries, exhibits and even a historical performance. NHD organizers say the event offers students a way to study history, and learn about issues, people, other cultures and events that interest them. Students may choose their own topics, then decide to work individually or as part of a group.
Westminster faculty, staff and students in the History Department organize and judge the competitions. Westminster has hosted the regional event for decades.
Each year more than half a million students participate in NHD across the country.
The winners at the regional NHD competition will go on to the Pennsylvania State competition on May 4 & 5 at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.
