Softball: Lady Titans Sweep Arrows to Make it Four Straight

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - The Westminster College softball team continued its winning streak by beating Ursuline College in a doubleheader 4-2, 6-1. The Lady Titans improved to 8-10 on the season while the Arrows fell to 6-10 overall.

In game one, the Lady Titans were trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning when junior designated hitter Layne Carpenter (Marietta, OH / Marietta) hit her first career home run.

Westminster tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning. Junior shortstop Katie Hughes (Boardman, OH / Cardinal Mooney) started the rally with a one out single. Senior third baseman Erica Kimmick (Parma, OH / Cuyahoga Heights) then doubled to score Hughes. Junior outfielder Brittany Gamble (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) pinch ran for Kimmick and after a Carpenter single, she advanced to third. Sophomore first baseman Lauren Stocyznski (Erie, PA / Harbor Creek) singled in the third run for the Lady Titans.

In the seventh inning, Westminster got an insurance run when sophomore second baseman Kelsey Squelch (Pittsburgh, PA / Perry Traditional) doubled, then advanced home on two separate wild pitches.

Carpenter led the Lady Titans with three hits in the first game, Stocyznski finished with two. Junior pitcher Chelsea Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) (5-4) earned the win for Westminster; she pitched a complete game and had 10 strikeouts.

In game two, Westminster jumped out to an early lead. Kelsey Squelch doubled to right center and was bunted over to third successfully by junior catcher Olet Stasko (McDonald, PA / West Allegheny).  Lauren Stocyznski singled to plate Squelch as the Titans scored the first run of the game.

Westminster scored a run in the second inning, two runs in third inning, and one in the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 6-1 victory.

Layne Carpenter and Kelsey Squelch had two hits apiece in game two. Freshman pitcher Carly Wallock (DuBois, PA / DuBois) (2-3) earned the win for Westminster after pitching five innings, striking out five, and only giving up one earned run. Freshman pitcher Carly Leffakis (Pittsburgh, PA / North Catholic) pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Westminster looks to make it five and six straight on Saturday at home versus Thomas More in the first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup of the season. First pitch scheduled for 1:00pm.
