Softball: Westminster 2012 Season Review

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - For the eighth time in the last nine years, the Westminster College softball team posted a winning record in 2012. The Titans, under the guidance of 16-year head coach Jan Reddinger, compiled a 22-19 record including an 11-7 mark for third place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Titans led the conference in sacrifice hits (46), assists (389) and double plays turned (20).
The third-seeded Westminster lost, 1-0, to the second-seeded Thiel in the semifinals of the PAC Tournament. Since the PAC starting taking only the top four teams for its championship tournament in 2006, the Titans have qualified in sixth of the last seven years.
Five Westminster players were named all-PAC including senior third baseman Erica Kimmick (Parma, Ohio/ Cuyahoga Heights) and designated player junior Layne Carpenter (Marietta, Ohio/ Marietta) on the first team.
Sophomore second baseman Kelsey Squelch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry Traditional), junior shortstop Katie Hughes (Boardman, Ohio/ Cardinal Mooney), and junior pitcher Chelsea Brown (New Castle, Pa./ Mohawk) also earned second-team laurels.
At the plate, Squelch led the team and was 15th in the PAC in batting (.350 BA). Her team-leading 50 hits tied for fifth in the PAC. Squelch had a team-best 30 runs, which tied fourth in the conference. She ranked first on the team with 26 RBIs and 69 total bases which stood eighth and tied for seventh, respectively, in the PAC.
On the mound, Brown led the team and was second in the conference with a career-best 16 wins. Her team-leading 115 strikeouts, 152.1 innings pitched, 30 appearances, 22 games started, two shutouts, 15 complete games, stood fourth, third, tied for second, third, tied for sixth, tied for third, respectively, in the PAC.
