Swimming & Diving: Titans Compete in Day 1 of the 10-School Wooster Invitational

WOOSTER, Ohio - The Westminster College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in day two of the Wooster Invitational hosted by the College of Wooster on Friday. The three-day invitational is hosted at Wooster High School. A total of 10 NCAA Division II and III schools are competing in the event.


Currently the Titan women are fifth out of 10 teams with 609 points and the Titan men are fifth out of nine schools with 651 points.


On Friday, the men earned eight top-8 finishes, including one third-place finish and two fourth-place finishes.


Sophomore Nicholas Smith (Indiana, PA / Indiana) and freshman Jimmy Newman (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) earned fourth (4:19.04) and seventh (4:20.70), respectively, in the 400 yard IM. Sophomore Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) earned third-place in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.81. Senior Dan Gutmann (Cranberry Twp., PA / Seneca Valley) placed sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke (59.00). Sophomores Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman) (52:14) and Pletz (54:58) touched sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100 yard backstroke. Brooks was also part of the 200 yard medley relay team that placed fifth with a time of 1:34.87. Completing the foursome were Gutmann, senior Alan Nedley (White, PA / Connellsville), and sophomore David Starr (Pittsburgh, PA / Plum). Also in the relays, the quartet of Newman, Smith, Nedley, and Pletz placed fourth in the 800 yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:11.01.


The women had six top-8 finishes, including one fourth-place finish. 

Junior Erin Erdley (Meadville, PA / Cochranton) had the highest finish for Westminster with a fourth-place finish in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:41.76. Erdley also teamed up with sophomore Marina Rozick (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny), senior Carolyn Swarlis (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth), and junior Carrie Whisel (Boiling Springs, PA / Boiling Springs) for an eighth-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (1:53.92). Freshman Kelsey Reott (Butler, PA / Slippery Rock) and Rozick earned fifth-(59:97) and sixth-place (1:00.20), respectively, in the 100 yard backstroke. Reott was also part of the sixth-place 800 yard freestyle relay team (8:03.88). Completing the team were Erdley, sophomore Veronica Corcoran (Dubois, PA / DuBois), and sophomore Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice).
