Swimming & Diving: Titans Place Fifth at Wooster Invite

WOOSTER, Ohio - The Westminster College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Wooster Invitational hosted by the College of Wooster. The three-day invitational was hosted at Wooster High School. A total of 10 NCAA Division II and III schools competed in the event.


The Titan women placed fifth out of 10 teams with 1084 points and the Titan men placed fifth out of nine schools with 976 points.


Senior Alan Nedley (White, PA / Connellsville) had the highest finish for the Titan men as he placed second in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.20.


Sophomore Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman), senior Dan Gutmann (Cranberry Twp., PA / Seneca Valley), Nedley, and sophomore Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) finished third in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:28.72. Pletz touched third in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.81 and Brooks placed third in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.67.


The quartet of freshman Jimmy Newman (Richboro, PA / Council Rock), sophomore Nicholas Smith (Indiana, PA / Indiana), Nedley, and Pletz placed fourth in the 800 yard freestyle relay (7:11.01). Newman placed fourth in the 1,650 yard freestyle with a time of 16:40.68. Rounding out the top-4 finishes for the men was Smith who placed fourth in the 400 yard IM at 4:19.04.


For the women, freshman Ericka Culp (Avonmore, PA / PA Cyber School) placed second in the 1-meter dive (340.70) and third in the 3-meter dive (329.90). Sophomore Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice) placed fourth in the 1,650 yard freestyle (18:05.34) and junior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg) touched fourth in the 200 yard butterfly (2:11.59).


Westminster will host Penn State Behrend next Saturday at 1 p.m.
