Swimming & Diving: Titans Remain Undefeated with Sweep Against Penn-State Behrend

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's and women's swimming & diving teams remained undefeated after a dual sweep over Penn-State Behrend on Saturday. The Titan men, who were receiving national votes this week, won 176.5-108.5 and the Titan women won 139-112.
The Westminster men and women improved to 6-0 overall. Penn-State's men dropped to 3-2 overall, while the women fell to 2-5.
Westminster won 11 of 16 men's events, not including two events where it used exhibition swimmers. The Titan women won eight of 16 events, not including two events where exhibition swimmers competed.
For the men, seniors Dan Gutmann (Cranberry Twp., PA / Seneca Valley) and Alan Nedley (White, PA / Connellsville) won two individual events each. Gutmann placed first in the 100 yard freestyle (49.14) and in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:00.24). Nedley touched first in the 200 yard butterfly (1:59.69) and in the 100 yard butterfly (52.47).
Gutmann and Nedley teamed up with sophomores Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman) and Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) to place first in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.36. Brooks (200 yard backstroke/1:56.56) and Pletz (200 yard freestyle/1:46.74) also won an individual event each.
Also scoring individual wins for the Titan men were sophomore Nicholas Smith (Indiana, PA / Indiana) (1,000 yard freestyle/10:26.53), sophomore David Starr (Pittsburgh, PA / Plum) (50 yard freestyle/22:10), senior Will Stiglitz (Franklin, PA / Cranberry) (200 yard breaststroke/2:15.26), and freshman Jimmy Newman (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) (500 yard freestyle/4:55.32).
For the women, the quartet of freshman Kelsey Reott (Butler, PA / Slippery Rock), freshman Sara Peace (Darlington, PA / Blackhawk), senior Carolyn Swarlis (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth), and sophomore Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice) won the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.98.
Peace (200 yard freestyle/2:05.46), Wyland (50 yard freestyle/25:73), and Reott (100 yard freestyle/56.18) also each won an individual event.
Rounding out the first-place finishers for the women were sophomore Veronica Corcoran (Dubois, PA / DuBois) (1,000 yard freestyle/11:29.88), junior Kate Bowers (Orrville, OH / Wooster) (100 yard backstroke/1:06.18), sophomore Jordan McElhaney (Butler, PA / Butler) (100 yard breaststroke/1:14.43), and junior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg) (200 yard butterfly/2:13.67).
Westminster begins Winter break and will compete next at Division II Rollins College on January 9 at 2 p.m.
