Swimming & Diving: Titans Sweep Mount Union on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept Mount Union on Saturday in Westminster's final meet of the regular season. The Titan men won 166-125, while the Titan women won 180-111. The Titan men and women improved to 10-2 and 9-4 overall, respectively. The Mount Union men's and women's team dropped to 9-5 and 10-3, respectively.
Westminster won a total of 20 events (10 men, 10 women).
Freshman Matt Baurle (Jeannette, PA / Penn Trafford) and senior Alan Nedley (White, PA / Connellsville) led the Titan men with two individual wins each and were also part of a winning relay team. Baurle won the 100 yard breaststroke (59.54) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:15.32). Nedley won the 100 yard butterfly (53.19) and the 200 yard butterfly (1:59.59). Baurle and Nedley were also part of the 200 yard medley relay team who placed first with a time of 1:36.63. Completing the quartet were sophomore Steven Brooks (Boardman, OH / Boardman) and senior Dan Gutmann (Cranberry Twp., PA / Seneca Valley).
Also earning first-place finishes for the men were freshman Jimmy Newman (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) (1,000 yard freestyle/10:20.49), freshman Austin Karper (Carlisle, PA / Carlisle) (100 yard backstroke/54.66), freshman Josh Mackin (White Oak, PA / Brentwood) (1 meter diving/165.75), sophomore Jake Pletz (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) (200 yard backstroke/2:03.05), and freshman Adam Smale (Monclova, OH / St. John's Jesuit) (200 yard IM/2:06.94).
Three Titans on the women's side earned multiple wins each. Sophomore Ashley Wyland (Pittsburgh, PA / Taylor Allderdice) won the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:04.92) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:26.74). Freshman Sara Peace (Darlington, PA / Blackhawk) won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:13.58) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:37.42). Freshman Kelsey Reott (Butler, PA / Slippery Rock) won the 200 yard backstroke (2:13.14) and the 200 yard IM (2:15.91).
Rounding out the first-place finishes for the women were junior Amanda Marlow (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg) (200 yard butterfly/2:14.83), freshman Candace Hall (Greensburg, PA / Greater Latrobe) (1 meter diving/194.45), senior Carolyn Swarlis (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth) (100 yard butterfly/1:01.59), and senior Abby Gardner (Medina, OH / Medina) (3 meter diving/171.80).
Westminster will take a week off to prepare for the 2013 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships which starts Wednesday, February 13, at 10 a.m.
