Titans take down Division II Salem-International in season opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's soccer team kicked-off the 2012 season with a 4-0 shutout over Division II Salem International on Saturday. The Titans did not give up a shot throughout the game and outshot the Tigers 27-0.


Junior Amanda Turi (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) led the offensive charge with a career-high seven shots, including four on goal, and a score. Turi connected a header at the 64:02 mark after a cross from freshman Rebecca Bradnam (Irwin, PA / Hempfield). Freshman Krista Edwards (Summerville, PA / Springdale) had an impressive game in her first collegiate game as she had six shots (four on goal) and a game-high two goals (11:18, 52:41). Edwards's first goal was set up from a nice cross from junior Jordan Steele (Falconer, NY / Falconer Central). Also scoring for Westminster was freshman Gretchen Schwarz (Hudson, OH / Hudson) after she received a pass from junior Maggie Nikituk (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny).


Senior goalie Jenn Cantella (Freedom, PA / Freedom) played solid between the pipes in 60:05 minutes of play and picked up the shutout win, her 11th of her career.


The Lady Titans are back on the field Tuesday as they host SUNY-Fredonia at 7:30 p.m.
