Women's Basketball: Buzzer-Beater Snaps Titans' Three-Game Winning-Streak

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team's three-game winning-streak was snapped after Thiel made a jumper with one second remaining in regulation to win, 65-63, Wednesday night. The Titans dropped to 8-10 overall and 6-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Tomcats improved to 5-13 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
Westminster had a 14-7 lead after a layup from senior Jenn Cantella (Freedom, PA / Freedom) with 13:09 remaining in the first half, however the Tomcats orchestrated an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game. A Tomcat three-pointer as time expired gave Thiel a 36-27 halftime lead.
Thiel had a commanding 49-35 lead with 13:44 remaining in regulation, however the Titans responded with a 25-11 run and tied the game at 60 when sophomoreJenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) completed a traditional three-point play with 2:38 on the clock.
After a three-pointer from each team, the Titans were unable to have the final shot after a turnover with 21 seconds remaining in the game.
For the game, Thiel shot 49.0% (25-51) and Westminster shot 31.9% (22-69).
Grandy led Westminster with 15 points (5-for-8), followed by Cantella and junior Hannah Shaffer (Apollo, PA / Apollo-Ridge) with 13 points each. Junior Gabby Holko (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Alvernia) and seniorKatie Hughes (Boardman, OH / Cardinal Mooney) contributed with eight and seven points, respectively. Hughes tied a career-high with a game-high 14 rebounds. Cantella pocketed a team-high three steals. Holko dished-out a team-high four assists.
The Titans will host Saint Vincent on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
