Women's Basketball: Titans Drop, 70-61, on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 70-61, to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Waynesburg Saturday on Senior Day inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. The Titans dropped to 10-13 overall and 8-8 in the PAC, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 12-11 overall and 11-5 in the conference.


In the first half, Waynesburg led 5-0 with 19:24 on the clock. Westminster responded with a 10-3 run to take its first lead of game, 10-8, when senior Katie Hughes (Boardman, OH / Cardinal Mooney) scored on a layup with 15:52 remaining in the half. The Titans, up 20-17 with 10:50 on the clock, orchestrated an 8-0 run to take its largest of the game at 28-17 with 4:09 remaining. The run was capped off with a three-pointer from junior Gabby Holko (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Alvernia). Senior Jenn Cantella (Freedom, PA / Freedom) earned the assist. The Titans led 31-26 at halftime.


Waynesburg came out in the second half with a 19-5 run to take a nine point lead (45-36) with 13:13 on the clock. Westminster cut Waynesburg's lead to 66-61 after a layup from Hughes with 2:31 remaining. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Titans 44-30 in the second half.   

For the game, Waynesburg outshot Westminster 42.4% (28-66) (56.7% in the second half) to 38.6% (22-57). Waynesburg also had the rebound advantage (44-35).


Hughes led the Titans with a double-double with a team-high 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, to go along with a game-high three steals. Holko followed with 13 points. Cantella added nine points, while seniors Andi Ridge (North Tonawanda, NY / Starpoint) and Danielle Gilmore (Washington, PA / Trinity) added eight points each. Rounding out the scorers for the Titans was sophomore Jenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) with six points. Ridge also had nine rebounds.


Jessi Drayer led Waynesburg with 20 points, while Paige Pearce had a team-high eight rebounds.


Westminster will play two games on the road before the 2013 PAC playoffs. First up is at Grove City on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
