Women's Basketball: Titans Fall 56-51 at W&J in PAC Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team dropped 56-51 at Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night in both team's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) season opener. The Titans fell to 1-4 overall, while the Presidents improved to 4-1. 

In the first half, Westminster took an early 5-0 lead which was topped off by a three-pointer from senior Jenn Cantella (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom). Junior Hannah Shaffer (Apollo, PA / Apollo-Ridge) earned the assist.


The Titans were ahead the entire first half and had its largest lead when senior Danielle Gilmore (Washington, PA / Trinity) found Shaffer for a three-pointer to give the Titans a 16-8 lead with 7:59 left on the clock. Gilmore continued Westminster's momentum right before intermission as she caused a W&J turnover and scored on a fastbreak layup as time expired. The Titans led 25-20 at halftime.


In the second half, Washington & Jefferson tied the game, 32-32, when Kara Seamon scored a three-pointer with 16:18 left.  There were six total ties in the second half, including when Gilmore connected on two free throws with 2:58 left to bring the score to 50-50. The Presidents, however, clinched the win after a 6-1 run to end the game.


Sophomore Jenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) led Westminster tying a career-high 10 points (4-of-8). Cantella and classmate Katie Hughes (Boardman, OH / Cardinal Mooney) followed with nine and eight points, respectively. Shaffer added seven points, while Gilmore earned six. Cantella scored a team-high three three-pointers, while Gilmore dished out a team-best four assists.


Hughes grabbed down a team-high eight rebounds for the Titans, while Shaffer earned four.
