Women's Basketball: Titans Snap Three-Game Winning Streak with Loss to Heidelberg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team fell 60-51 to the visiting Heidelberg University Wednesday night inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. The Titans snapped a three-game winning-streak and dropped to 4-6 overall and the Student Prince improved to 5-5.


In the first half, Heidelberg led 15-3 after a traditional three-point play from Kathleen Phillips with 13:01 on the clock. The Titans battled back and tied it, 22-22, after a 19-7 run that was capped off with a three-pointer from junior Gabby Holko (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Alvernia) with 1:58 remaining in the half. The Berg led 25-24 at intermission.


The Titans took their first lead of the game during their first possession in the second half when senior Katie Hughes (Boardman, OH / Cardinal Mooney) scored on a layup to put Westminster in front 26-25. Westminster had its largest lead of the game on its next possession when senior Andi Ridge (North Tonawanda, NY / Starpoint) converted on two free throws to make the score 28-25. Heidelberg, however, responded with a 20-0 run and led 45-28 with 10:29 remaining in the game. Westminster got within eight points two separate times, but was not able to overcome the deficit.


Hughes led Westminster with a double-double, including a team-high 16 points and tied a team-high 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double-digits for the Titans were Holko and senior Jenn Cantella (Freedom, PA / Freedom) who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Holko scored a team-high four three-pointers. Ridge added eight points and 10 rebounds, while junior Hannah Shaffer (Apollo, PA / Apollo-Ridge) had nine rebounds to go along with game-highs of two blocks and three steals. Shaffer and Holko had a team-high three assists each.


Westminster will enter Christmas break and will next play at Carnegie Mellon on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.
