KISSIMMEE, Fla. ā€“ The Westminster College softball team concluded its Rebel Spring Games Florida trip with a split on Wednesday.

The Titans won, 9-1 in five innings, over Knox in the first game and lost to SUNY Cortland, 9-2, in game two.

Against Knox (0-1), Westminster took a 4-0 lead after four runs in the first inning. Senior Checka Nardone (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) grounded in senior Emily Lindsey (Freeport, PA / Freeport) for the first run. Sophomore Cheyenne Shifflett (Etters, PA / Trinity) connected on a two-run single, scoring junior Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) and sophomore Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley), extending Westminster’s lead to 3-0. Junior Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango) scored the final run in the inning with a ground out, bringing home junior Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry). The Titans scored four more runs in the second inning and led 8-0. Westfall got the scoring started with a two-run single, scoring Liverman and Nardone. Westfall and Dieterich scored the last two runs. Knox spoiled the shutout with a run in the third, while the Titans registered their final run in the fifth inning after sophomore Makena Baumgardner (Summerhill, PA / Forest Hills) singled home Owrey. Senior Abby Rinard (Medina, OH / Highland) (1-0) pitched three innings, only allowing one run on one hit. Rinard struck out a career-high seven batters and walked four.

Cortland (3-3), who was in the national rankings, scored one run in the first inning, one in the second, three in the third, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth. Westminster scored its two runs in the fifth inning when senior Emily Lindsey (Freeport, PA / Freeport) scored junior Courtney Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) with a ground out and Nardone brought home Owrey with a single. Titan first-year pitcher Kayla Troxil (Canfield, OH / Canfield) (1-4) threw three innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits.

Westminster (6-4) is back in action Wednesday, March 22 with a doubleheader versus Hiram College for its home-opener. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
