LAS VEGAS– Westminster College graduate Garry Gates was among the people who survived the sniper rampage in Las Vegas a year ago, the worst mass shooting in US history. The massacre left 59 people dead and 527 more injured.
Police identified the shooter as Stephen Paddock who opened fire from a hotel window of the 32nd floor at Mandalay Bay Hotel. He targeted the people attending the Route 91 outdoor concert where Gates and his friends were enjoying the day.
The 2003 grad was near the stage when the shooting began. Gates, who received a B.A. in English, is a Las Vegas area resident and works for PokerStars as a Senior Consultant of Player Affairs. PokerStars is the largest online gaming poker website in the world. Gates and his friends were among the thousands of terrified survivors fleeing for cover during the shooting.
Gates shared his story of his first-hand experience that night with WCN’s Terrell Cleckley in a highly personal and raw interview via Facetime.
