NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — They’re loud. They’re proud. They’re the ladies that make up the Greek community here at Westminster College. On a sunny Saturday in January, the five sororities on campus- Alpha Gamma Delta, Kappa Delta, Phi Mu, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha-welcomed their new members with open arms and lots of glitter.
Bid Day is the culmination of the previous week’s events that allow independent women to explore the sororities on campus and choose which to call their family for the next four years. After spending the week attending parties hosted by each sorority, new members received bid cards early Saturday morning revealing which sorority they will join. The ladies then travel to Orr Auditorium and stand before a screaming crowd as they flip a sign showing which sorority they have joined. For the current members, this is the first time they discover who has become part of their sisterhood. After flipping their letters, new members are stormed by their new sisters and showered with hugs, gifts, flowers, and lots of love.
This spring, 48 women joined the Greek community. They come from a variety of hometowns, majors, and backgrounds, but have now been brought together by sisterhood. The ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta had a rock’n’roll themed bid day, complete with fishnets and mini skirts. They welcomed 8 new members into the nuthouse. Kappa Delta collected 9 new members to wear the green and white. Phi Mu’s class was on the larger end, as they picked up 10 new “Phis”. Sigma Kappa had the largest pick up class on Saturday. They welcomed 12 little doves home. Finally, Zeta Tau Alpha found 9 new “babes”, in addition to the 4 that they picked up last fall. According to Gina Vance, Panhellenic advisor, each sorority met their quota and picked up the minimum number of new members. Additionally, she said that “each chapter performed well during recruitment and should be proud of the effort they out forth”.
With another successful bid day in the books, the following weeks will be dedicated to traditions that are unique to each chapter. New members will get to know their sisters even better, until this time next year when they get to stand in the audience and experience bid day from a whole new point of view.
