NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (WC)– Officials have closed Westminster College for Thursday, Jan. 31, because of the frigid weather affecting all of western Pennsylvania. Westminster College joins other local colleges, universities, and public school districts in closing for the day.

Weminster’s classes have been canceled as a safety precaution as forecasters predict -20-degree windchills. College officials encourage non-essential personnel to stay home as well.

“As a safety precaution for students, faculty, and staff, Thursday classes will not be held in person,” Academic Affairs Dean Jeffery Coker announced in a campus-wide email on Wednesday. “All students should check email and D2L for announcements from individual faculty about any out-of-class work that will be expected.”

Wednesday classes were also cancelled, and classes will return to their regular schedules on Friday.

The National Weather Service says a wind chill warning is in effect because extreme temperatures that put you at risk for frostbite. College officials are calling for students stay inside as much as possible.

Dining Services, the McKelvey Campus Center, the Field House, and Old 77 will operate on their regular schedule.
