NEW WILMINGTON, PA (WC)—Westminster College Celebrity Series will kick off its 2018-2019 season with Lonesome Traveler: The Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in Orr Auditorium on the Westminster College campus.
Lonesome Traveler: The Concert is a musical journey down the rivers and streams of American folk and celebrates the music of artists including Woody Guthrie; Bob Dylan; Leadbelly; Pete Seeger and the Weavers; The Limeliters; Peter, Paul and Mary; The Byrds; Buffalo Springfield; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Joan Baez; Joni Mitchell; and Simon & Garfunkel, with a special tribute to Leonard Cohen.
Their songs have inspired multiple generations, including those who are a part of today’s Americana and Roots movements.
Charismatic young singers and multi-instrumentalists will perform songs that have inspired multiple generations, including those who are a part of today’s Americana and Roots movements. The concert will feature a selection of patriotic songs, church hymns, union anthems and songs of protest, such as “If I Had a Hammer,” “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “This Land is Your Land,” “This Little Light of Mine,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “The Times They are a-Changin’,” and “Hallelujah.”
The show is based on the acclaimed Off-Broadway musical that received Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations and which The New York Times called “Illuminating. Relevatory. Achingly beautiful.” Created by NAACP Award-winner James O’Neil and Tony Award nominee Dan Wheetman with orchestrations by Grammy Award-winner George Grove of The Kingston Trio, Lonesome Traveler: The Concert is a powerful anthem to folk and folk-rock music and a revealing perspective of the roots forever embedded in our culture.
