WAMPUM, Pa. (AP) – FirstEnergy Corp. plans to spend $48 million to expand an electrical substation in Lawrence County.
The company says the move to expand at the Wampum site in Lawrence County will greatly enhance service to customers in the area.
The project includes installing specialized voltage-regulating equipment designed to respond to real-time electrical condition, meaning the system will boost or reduce voltage as needed to maintain consistent levels on the regional grid.
The Hoytdale substation is expected to enhance service for more than 160,000 customers of Penn Power.
The expansion is part of a $4.2 billion project by FirstEnergy to upgrade and enhance high-voltage transmission systems in an effort to modernize the regional grid.
Work is expected to be complete by early June.
