NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Members of the Titan football squad had their hardest workout of the preseason during freshmen move in day.
The football team up with the Fresh Start crew helps incoming freshmen move in to their dorms every fall. The two groups literally open doors and do the heavy lifting for incoming students. For members of the football team, heavy lifting is part of how they train. Carrying boxes, suitcases and refrigerators is a perfect way for them to show their strength and stamina.
When it comes to moving in freshmen, football players have an informal Titan tradition. The defensive and offensive lines stage a friendly competition when it comes to the number of min-refrigerators each side can haul during move-in process. The Titans offensive line takes pride in winning this competition each year.
This year the offensive line crushed again with 17 fridges lifted by one man, making a new high score and giving the O-line another year of bragging rights.
Fridge lifting competition:
- Mini fridges weight from 30 to 50 pounds
- Fridges come in many shapes and sizes
- The highest number of fridges lifted in past years 15 fridges
- New highest number is 17
- The trophy bragging rights for the whole year
This year the football team recruited well this year with 79 incoming players heading into the 2016 season. Westminster also saw a jump in enrollment with 396 incoming freshmen.
The competition even involved non-football players. The Fresh Start crew from Student Affairs also helped with the heavy lifting. also helps move freshmen in on that day.
One way the first-year students can thank the Titans is to cheer them on at Burry Stadium. Westminster kicks off the 2016 season when the team hosts Hiram on Saturday, Sept. 3.
