NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Westminster College will host more than 100 students from 11 area middle and high schools during the regional History Day competition on Thursday, March 7, in the McKelvey Campus Center.

The opening ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. in the Witherspoon Room and the awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the Maple Room.

This year’s History Day theme is “Triumph and Tragedy in History.” Contestants may submit entries in the following contest categories: historical papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries and websites. Each student’s entry will be evaluated by three judges, comprised of Westminster faculty, staff and students. Prizes will be awarded to the best entries in each category in junior and senior divisions.

This year’s 119 participants will represent: Grove City Middle School, Highland Middle School, Holy Sepulcher Catholic School, Knoch High School, Lakeview Middle School, Neshannock Senior High School, Sharpsville Area High School, Sharpsville Area Middle School, Shimo Homeschool, St. Michael School and St. Patrick School

The competition gives students an exciting way to study history and learn about issues, people, other cultures and events that interest them.

The top three winners will advance to the state competition held May 10-11 at Carlisle High School in Carlisle, Pa. Winners at the state level will compete in the National History Day competition June 9-13 at the University of Maryland.
