FBI agents were on the scene at Ellwood City's closed hospital this week.  The city's mayor tells reporters about 20 agents were on the scene on Thursday and removed boxes of material from the medical center.

Mayor Anthony Court referred to the activity as a raid by federal agents.  He says they're investigating the records and financial materials for the hospital that closed abruptly in December.

The FBI is remaining quiet but confirmed the agency is investigating alleged white-collar crimes.

Americore Health LLC, a for-profit corporation, took over the Ellwood City Medical Center in 2017.  It filed bankruptcy late last year.

The medical center went from 450 employees to none.  Americore Health faced failed to meet payroll on time last year, and many workers say they haven't been paid.  The State Health Department closed the emergency room and inpatient services late last year after identifying 40 violations, including the lack of essential equipment inside.  Employees allege Americore removed equipment over the past several months.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General and the Lawrence County District Attorney are also conducting investigations.
