Moonlight paddles to waterfall hikes- events for McConnells Mill & Moraine State Parks

PORTERSVILLE, Pa.-- The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has announced a number of summer programs at McConnells Mill State Park and Moraine State Park.  Here's the list!

DiscoverE Penns Adventurers (Ages 9-12 Only) 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM – Lakeview Pavilion #4 (Lakeview Beach North Shore). Outdoor Skills & Adventures - Penns Adventurers Day Camp will be held on three Wednesdays: June 23, June 30 & July 7, 2021. 9-12-year-olds are invited to become Penns Adventurers as we learn about outdoor skills and take on new adventures. June 23 – Disc Golf & Fishing, June 30 – Kayaking & Firemaking. July 7 – Archery and Hiking. The park will provide all equipment and materials for each program. Pre-register required. Full Moon Paddle – Thursday, June 24, 2021. 8:00 PM – 10:30 PM - Pleasant Valley Launch (South Shore) – Moraine. Paddling Lake Arthur in the full moon is a wonderful experience. Join us for some fun as we explore the lake during the full moon. A limited number of kayaks are available. Ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteer Work Day – Saturday, June 26, 2021. 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Meet at 528 Bridge. Come join us to make Moraine State Park look its best. Bring sturdy shoes, work clothes, work gloves and bring a friend. If you have a large group of volunteers (Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts etc.), please contact Mike Shaffer at (724) 368-8811 to discuss appropriate projects for your group's numbers and abilities that day. Our main project will be to paint over the graffiti on the 528 Bridge abutments. Bring a lunch and some snacks, water, and dress for working in the outdoors. Pre-registration is required. Waterfall Hiking Series: Kildoo Falls – Saturday, June 26, 2021. 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM – Kildoo Picnic Area – McConnells Mill. Want to get moving and enjoy the beauty of nature at the same time? Join the Park Naturalist for a morning hike to Kildoo Falls. This one-mile hike will help get your blood moving and elevate your heart rate. In addition, you will learn about the local geology, Kildoo Trail mill, and waterfall safety. Wear sturdy hiking boots, dress for the weather, and bring drinking water and a snack. All current health guidelines will be followed. Pre-registration is required. To reserve your spot, call the Park Office (724) 368-8811.

Explore Offshore – Friday, July 2, 2021. 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM – McDanel’s Launch Area (North Shore) – Moraine. Join Moraine Park staff in a kayaking adventure. Explore along the shore of Lake Arthur, where dragonflies, heron, and fish thrive. Borrow binoculars and watch an osprey soar. During this nature-based paddle, participants will learn some essential kayak tips and set off to explore some of the lake inlets and learn about the lake and its wildlife. Ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Kayak and gear provided, or bring your own—life jackets required to be worn. Pre-registration required. Registration opens on June 17. Family Fishing - Friday, July 2, 2021. 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Bear Run Boat Launch (South Shore) – Moraine State Park. Looking for a great way to connect with your family? Discover just how much fun fishing can be when you do it together at a PFBC Family Fishing Program. Learn basic fishing skills like knot tying, casting, baiting the hook, and taking a fish off the hook. You and your family will have the opportunity to fish – no fishing license required. All equipment provided. The “catch???” Adults must bring a child, and children must bring an adult. You’ll be learning and fishing together. Pre-registration required. Silver Paddle - Thursday, July 8, 2021. 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM – McDanel’s Launch (North Shore) - Moraine. Experience the peace and tranquility that can be yours floating on Lake Arthur. This entry-level kayaking program is designed to meet the needs of those more interested in an easy peaceful experience and nature watching rather than a long hard paddle. Meet the park naturalist to learn about Moraine's wildlife and experience the peace and beauty that Lake Arthur has to offer. Ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Morning Wild Teas – Friday, July 9, 2021. 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM – Kildoo Picnic Area – McConnells Mill. Wake up and enjoy the morning and nature with some wild teas and the Park Naturalist. Nature has a lot to offer, including edible plants. Some of these plants were used by our ancestors and are still enjoyed by some today by making them into tea. Not only will you get to taste-test the teas to find your favorite, but you will also learn how to make them, about the plants they came from, and collection practices/precautions. You may bring your own snack, maybe a crumpet or two, to enjoy with your tea. All current health guidelines will be followed. Pre-registration is required. Muddy Creek Oil Field Living History Exhibit - Saturday, July 10, 2021. 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM – Park Road - Moraine State Park. Come see a restored oil well in operation! The Muddy Creek Oil Well is an award-winning restoration site of an antique oil well. The Bessemer Gas Engine and Marshall-Barr No. 19 oil well equipment is restored and open (free admission) for visitors to hear and see the industry that powered this region. The well will operate from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM weather permitting. Volunteers will be there to operate the engine and answer your questions. So come out and see the Bessemer engine pump some Pennsylvania crude. The central powerhouse site is located beyond the State Parks Region 2 office, 195 Park Road, Prospect PA, (Old 422 off Route 528). Visit www.3mjc.org for more information.
