NEW WILMINGTON, pa – Brett Wilcox, a first-year business major who plays lacrosse, was worried yet excited to start his undergraduate career at Westminster College. Brett was a good student in high school, but he understood he would face new challenges on this journey. College is supposed to be more rigorous with hectic schedules. However, Brett explained he is pleasantly surprised about one specific aspect of the classes on his schedule.
"I actually really enjoy all my classes so far," Wilcox said. “I think it’s because all my teachers are pretty chill. I've never really had cool teachers in high school. All of my teachers throughout life have been pretty mean. But having chill teachers makes me want to learn more."
This can be an aspect of college that many first-year students at Westminster may not expect. Brett's experience during the first week of classes has set up a learning environment where he's engaged and wants to thrive.
"I really like my intro to business teacher, and that helps because business is my major."
He was nervous about moving into the residence hall and attending his first day, just like his peers. Now that orientation is behind him, Brett has settled in and feels better about the transition to college. For Brett, he's happy that his classes are engaging, and he's no longer nervous but energized for the weeks ahead.
