NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Many college students out there have many things on their plates—balancing a sport, balancing music, balancing just being away from home. However, imagine balancing your own business as a 21-year-old while being a full-time college student.
Alex Mullen '23, majoring in business administration and marketing while minoring in entrepreneurship and human resources. Wow, that was a lot to say. Mullen has been balancing two majors and two minors while studying here at Westminster and developed his car detailing business titled AM Auto Detailing.
"I started detailing cars around 14 years old. I started doing some just around my neighborhood." Mullen added, "I continuously reinvested into it, and I now have a fully mobile detailing business that services the Pittsburgh and New Castle area while I'm in school."
Without a doubt, Mullen has expanded AM Auto Detailing after just doing his local area back in Pittsburgh.
"I've been lucky enough to get to work with some really great people around Pittsburgh. Steelers players, business owners, and car collectors. It's been a great experience for me."
Some notable clients Mullen has worked with have been Steelers' wide receivers Juju Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool. Additionally, Steelers' safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick. Mullen has also worked with Jared Zych, owner of NOLAC Inc., located in South Side, Pittsburgh.
"All of them have been influential to me, and it's an honor to be able to work with them."
Mullen has also built AM Auto Detailing through social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. While posting daily on all three platforms, Mullen has also attracted clients by word-of-mouth advertising and simply delivering a job well done.
Additionally, Mullen makes his detailing apparel, selling T-shirts, sweatshirts, and long-sleeve shirts through his AM Auto Detailing Website. Those clothes have been his main focus for now; however, he has said that he is open to making more apparel in the future.
There are many challenges that Mullen has faced while trying to balance both school and AM Auto Detailing.
"I've really tried to focus my efforts into getting my clientele up in New Castle to limit my traveling back and forth to Pittsburgh. Occasionally, I will make the drive back to Pittsburgh on the weekends, but I have mainly tried to expand my business up here."
To add, Mullen is an excellent student while obtaining a 3.7 GPA while having two majors and two minors. It's safe to say. Mullen takes academics and his business very seriously.
"It can be very hard fighting a burnout. I do get tired a lot. Yet, I try to combat this by planning time for myself and accommodating a work schedule to deliver results."
Mullen also talked about what he hopes to gain from this experience.
"I just hope to meet and learn from everyone I work with and always have something of my own that I can always do. I want to be remembered as someone that genuinely cared about everyone and everything, I was a part of. As well as being looked at as someone that got to do something they loved their way."
Mullen has made an impression on me and how he's balanced everything on his plate while being a full-time student. I hope he impressed you as well.
