YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio-- Senior Finance major Lauryn Todd will assist the Youngstown Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) in facilitating a Women in Entrepreneurship Series throughout the summer of 2021. The series—initiated by president of Youngstown SCORE Ron Emery—will feature successful female employees from diverse professional backgrounds who will vocalize their experiences in obtaining success as women navigating gender inclusivity and diversity. The series will be held in a virtual roundtable format via Zoom from June 9th to August 4th.

Todd—who became involved with the series through the Westminster Entrepreneurship Center, where she serves as the Director of Strategic Initiatives—provides context and enthusiasm on the series.

“Emery really saw that the community could benefit so greatly from doing something just for women.  I believe in the value of what we’re trying to do here, which is [support] women. Each week will feature a different industry [with] different professionals getting on a call [and] talking about their experience—what they’ve gone through…their challenges, and the things that they have faced, accomplished, and overcome to really help guide [young adults] aspiring to be in positions like them.”

Todd explains that the series will be similar to Westminster’s virtual Professional Networking Symposium,

“We will have a group of three to five panelists each week. We will be asking them a lot of the same questions—their name, their background, how they got to be where they are, etc. We will also be asking them questions specific to their job. Facilitators will be asking questions for the first hour and fifteen minutes. Then, we’ll give participants a chance to ask their own questions.”

She encourages attendees to connect with panelists after events to receive optimal benefits from the sessions and wants people to network with the panelists and maintain professional connections.

“All of our panelists are willing to help all of our participants as much as they can. I’ve been to events like these and, [one-on-one communication] has prompted some of the greatest connections that I’ve had.”

While the series will feature female professionals, Todd encourages non-female community members to attend as well to open the discussion of female presence in the workforce to as many individuals as possible.

“I also encourage men to attend, so that they can see some of the challenges that these women have faced in seeing how we break down the barriers to inclusivity and diversity…Some of our panelists have gone through a lot to get where they are, just because they are women at power tables that are usually filled with men.”

Todd concludes her promotion by highlighting the enthusiasm that panelists display for the series, explaining, “I have had an overwhelmingly positive response from our panelists. They believe in the power of mentorship the same way that I do, the same way that Ron does. That’s really what we’re trying to cultivate through the program. They’re really trying to make the most of it for our participants, and I’m super excited for that.”
