NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team won both games against the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets in a home doubleheader on Monday. The Titans won game one, 12-2, in a seven-inning game, before claiming game two by a score of 14-2 in a nine-inning contest.
In the first game, Westminster (6-10, 4-8 PAC) got ahead of Waynesburg (4-8, 2-7 PAC) with a huge seven-run first inning, including two two-RBI singles by graduate student Frank Cinicola (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) and junior Dawson Porter (Kittanning, PA / Armstrong). The Titans added another run in the second courtesy of an RBI-single by senior Vincent Morelli (Ambridge, PA / Ambridge Area) to take a commanding 8-0 lead. That lead proved to be all that sophomore pitcher Frankie Manios (Warren, OH / Howland) needed on the mound and the Titans cruised to a game-one victory.
Cinicola, Morelli and junior Austin Webb (Wadsworth, OH / Wadsworth) each had a game-high two hits, while Cinicola and Morelli each tied a game-high with three RBIs. Manios got his first career win on the mound, tossing a complete game (seven innings) giving up five hits, two runs and striking out one. The Titans did not commit a single error in the first game.
In the nightcap, Westminster again scored first, this time to the tune of five runs in the bottom of the second inning, capped off by a bases-clearing triple by Porter. Porter also scored on an error on the exact same play to give the Titans a 5-0 lead. Waynesburg managed to plate one run in the top of the fourth to make it 5-1, but Westminster responded with a four-run bottom half, giving them a commanding 9-1 lead as the Titans again sealed an easy victory.
Cinicola and junior Seth Schrader (Fredonia, NY / Fredonia) led the way in game two as each tied a game-high with three hits. Porter and junior Mike Grazier (Austintown, OH / Austintown Fitch) each knocked in a game-high three RBIs. Morelli and Webb each tied a game-high with three runs scored. Senior Paul Midili (Spring Hill, FL / Bishop Mclaughlin Catholic) earned his third win of the season after going five innings, giving up two hits, one run and striking out four. Junior Logan Minch (Grove City, PA / Grove City Area) added four innings out of the bullpen, scattering four hits, one run and striking out two.
Westminster is back in action on Saturday, April 10 when it starts its series with the Bethany College Bison in West Virginia for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 1 p.m.
