Football: Columbo Scores 5 TDs in Titans’ 49-27 Homecoming Win Over Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College football team won, 49-27, over Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College for its Homecoming game Saturday afternoon.

The Titans improved to 5-1 overall and remain undefeated in the PAC at 4-0. The Wolverines dropped to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Titan senior Paul Columbo (Boca Raton, FL / West Boca Raton) tied a career-high with five total touchdowns. Columbo went 11 of 19 for 231 passing yards and four touchdowns, to go along with 94 yards on the ground and a score which came from 89 yards out. Columbo’s previous game with five total touchdowns was against Grove City in 2014, the same game where he broke the school’s longest run record with a 96-yard touchdown.

Sophomore Connor Cox (Ridge, MD / Leonardtown) had a career day, with a game-high three catches for a career-high 118 yards, to go along with two scores, including the first touchdown of his career. Senior Jametrius Bentley (Lake Worth, FL / Park Vista Community) registered 53 rushing yards off five carries and a score, to go along with two receptions for 39 yards.

Junior Travis Lauster (Prospect, PA / Slippery Rock) tied with senior CJ Armstrong (Lake Worth, FL / Park Vista) for a game-high 10 tackles. Junior Bill Madeja (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) added nine tackles, while senior Tyler Beatrice (Monaca, PA / Central Valley) had six. Armstrong tallied a game-high 3.5 tackles for a loss. Beatrice and senior Bobby Noble (Murrysville, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) added two tackles for a loss. Freshman John Cybak (Massillon, OH / Tuslaw) was 7-of-7 from extra points.

Grove City had an early 13-0 lead with 5:37 remaining in the first half. Wesley Schools scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Mitch Causer made a pair of field goals (37, 35). Westminster responded with two quick touchdowns in the closing minutes of the first half, courtesy of Columbo. Columbo dashed into the end zone from 89 yards out for the Titans’ first score with 2:05 on the clock and found Cox for a 66-yard pass and catch with 55 seconds remaining in the half. Cybak made both extra points and the Titans led 14-13 at halftime.

Columbo extended Westminster’s lead, on the Titans’ opening drive of the second half, after a 9-yard pass to senior Zaire Williams (Sicklerville, N.J. / Timber Creek).

After Grove City’s Randall Labrie found Cody Gustafson for 16-yard yard touchdown pass, the Titans scored three-straight touchdowns to take a commanding 41-19 lead with 14:34 left in the fourth. Columbo found Cox again through the air, this time from 45-yards out, senior Todd Jeter(Monroeville, PA / Gateway) returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown, and Columbo registered his fourth passing touchdown of the game, fifth total, after finding junior Bryson Paulinellie(DuBois, PA / Dubois Area) for a 23-yard touchdown.

The Wolverines added a score with 12 minutes on the clock, when Labrie passed to Matt Pennypacker from 34 yards out. Bentley scored the final touchdown with an eight-yard run with 2:35 remaining in the game.

Westminster is back in action Saturday, Oct. 21 with a road game at 15th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
