Men’s Golf: Bell and Shaughnessy Pace Titans at Day Three of NCAA Tournament

WHEELING, W.Va. - The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Champion Westminster men's golf team is tied for 12th place after Day Three of the four-day NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Thursday.

Westminster fired a team score of 311 (+27) today on the par-71, 6,857-yard Speidel Jones Course at Oglebay Resort after shooting a school-record round of 283 (+3) in the second round at the par-70, 6,621-yard Palmer Course yesterday and have a three-day score of 908 (+60), currently five shots back of the top-10 teams.

Westminster was headed by graduate transfer Brendan Shaughnessy (Canonsburg, PA / Bishop Canevin) and junior Michael Bell (Canonsburg, PA / Peters Township) in day three, as Shaughnessy put together a five-over par round of 76, while Bell got around the course in 77 (+6) strokes. Shaughnessy's round was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the par-4 sixth hole and the par-4 13th, while Bell carded four birdies on the day including three on his first nine (Westminster started on the 10th hole). Bell currently is tied for 18th place in the national championship field at +10 over three days, eight shots back of the leaders who are currently two-over par heading into the final round. Shaughnessy is tied for 45th individually at +16 over three rounds.

Senior Jonny Stuckert (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) also got around the Speidel Jones Course in the 70's, carding a 78 (+7) highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole. Stuckert is tied for 54th place in the individual standings at 17-over par heading into round four. Sophomore Calen Cummins (Allison Park, PA / Hampton) was the last counting score for Westminster, posting a round of 80 (+9). Cummins recorded two birdies on the par-5 fifth hole and the par-3 15th hole. Cummins is two-under par total on par-3's this week, the best score in the field on par-3's. Cummins is tied with Stuckert in 54th place at 17-over par at the end of three rounds. Sophomore Sam Napper (Mt Pleasant, PA / Mt Pleasant) rounded out the day for Westminster with a round of 82 (+11). Napper is tied for 92nd place individually with a three-day total of +29.

Westminster will be back on the course tomorrow for the final round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament when Napper tees off at 8:20 a.m.
