Softball: Titans Open 2020 Season in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Westminster College softball team opened their 2020 season at The Spring Games on Sunday. The Titans lost, 4-1 in eight innings, against Montclair St. University in game one and won, 13-1, in six innings over Juniata College in the afternoon game.

Against Montclair State (4-0), the Titans fell behind in the third inning as Amber Powers' double scored Alexa Penna, who had reached base earlier on an error. The Titans tied the game up after first-year Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) doubled to center field, scoring fellow first-year Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette). After the seventh inning, the game was still tied and went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Montclair State's Amber Powers tripled home a run to give the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead. Powers later scored on an error, doubling the lead for Montclair State (3-1). The Red Hawks still were not done as Blake Saperstein singled home one more run to make it 4-1. Sophomore pitcher Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) pitched a complete game giving up one earned run and collecting six strikeouts. Junior Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) led the Titans at the plate with two hits. Latess collected the first RBI of her career with her double in the fourth inning.

Against Juniata, (0-1), the Titans got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning as Latess's double scored first-year Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette) to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, first-year Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) hit a two-run home run, the first of her career, to give the Titans a 3-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Juniata added a run on a sacrifice bunt from junior Ashley Clark. The Titans got that run right back in the top of the second as Bedalota singled home junior Breanna Tetirick (New Concord, OH / John Glenn). Senior Lauren McNany (Elenton, PA / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) earned her first RBI of the season as she doubled home Latess in the top of the fourth inning. Later in the inning, sophomore Krystina Burdelski (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) scored off of a single by Yates. Latess added two more RBIs to her total as she scored two more on a ground out to the second baseman making it 8-1 after the fourth inning. In the top of the sixth, Yates singled home Bedalota to get things going. Yates later scored on a double by Latess, giving her a career-high three hits and five RBIs. Latess scored as Pancake smashed her first career home run of her collegiate career to left field giving the Titans a 12-1 lead. The Titans added one more run to their lead when sophomore Jaira Cowie (Mt. Lebanon, PA / Mt. Lebanon) reached base on an error scoring fellow classmate Sydney Rankin (Emlenton, PA / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) to give the Titans a 13-1 lead. Burdelski pitched a complete game allowing one run on five hits and striking out four. Latess led the Titans at the plate going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs, while classmate Yates went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Westminster (1-1) will continue its Florida slate with two games on Monday, March 9. Westminster will play Carroll University at 4:15 p.m., followed by Penn-State Berks at 6:30 p.m.
