GREENVILLE, Pa. (pacathletics.org)--The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) released the results of this season’s PAC Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll, along with its Players to Watch list, on Thursday. Washington & Jefferson College and 18th-year head coach Jeff Mountain earned eight first-place votes and 64 total points to secure the top spot on this year’s preseason poll.
The annual preseason poll collects votes from each of the league's nine head coaches.
The players to watch list features 18 returning All-PAC performers, including four members of the All-PAC First Team.
Grove City College, led by fifth-year head coach Matt Royer, finished second in the poll. The Wolverines collected the final first-place vote and 52 points.
There was a tie for third in this year's poll as Bethany College, led by second-year head coach Justin Thomas, and Thiel College, led by 21st-year head coach Joe Schaly, each finished with 43 points.
Waynesburg University was picked fifth (40) and was followed by Saint Vincent College in sixth (33), Westminster College in seventh (23), Chatham University in eighth (16) and Geneva College ninth (10).
W&J enters the season ranked No. 20 in the D3Baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) Preseason Top 25 poll. It is coming off a historic 2019 season which saw the program advance to the NCAA Division III College World Series for a second time in the past three seasons. W&J finished with a 38-13 overall record and a 21-3 mark in PAC in 2019. Its 38 wins last season marked the second most during a single-season in W&J program history, trailing only the 42-win season during the 2017 run to the College World Series.
W&J finished with a 9-2 record during its postseason run, as the Presidents swept their way through the PAC Championship Tournament, the Division III Salisbury University Regional and the Division III Super Regional over Misericordia University to advance to its second Division III College World Series in program history.
W&J was ranked No. 6 in the final D3baseball.com Top 25 poll and ranked No. 7 ranking in the season-ending ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30.
This year's PAC Championship Tournament is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9. The regular season champion will host the league's four-team, double-elimination tournament.
The winner of this year’s championship tournament title will secure the league's automatic qualifying bid to the Division III Championship, with teams and regional site selections scheduled to be announced Monday, May 11.
Regional preliminary round play is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, May 15-17. This will be Division III's second year utilizing the Super Regional format, with teams divided into sixteen, four-team regional double-elimination tournaments. Regional champions will compete in the Super Regionals, a best-of-three-game series, on Friday-Saturday, May 22-23 to determine the eight participants in the Division III College World Series, which is scheduled for Friday-Wednesday, May 29-June 3 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
