Women’s Basketball: Titans Open Season with Win Over Wooster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster women’s basketball team won, 57-50, in their season opener at home against non-conference foe, Wooster, on Tuesday.

As the first quarter was nearing an end, Westminster (1-0) was able to hold an early 18-6 lead as it would score 12 of the last 15 points. Junior Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) led the team with six points in the first. In the second quarter, Wooster (1-2) was able to score 12 of the first 19 points, however, the Titans persevered as they scored five straight points to remain in the lead. At intermission Westminster led 28-22.

The Fighting Scots came out strong in the start of the second half as they scored eight of the first ten points, tying the game at 30. The Titans finished the quarter with the momentum in hand as they went on an 8-2 run to led 38-32. Wooster did not go quietly as they scored five straight points (38-37). Foul trouble hurt the Fighting Scots as the Titans’ next four points came from the charity stripe (42-37) with 7:39 to play.  With 1:59 left in the game (48-44), junior Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, OH / Ursuline) converted a momentum-building and-one opportunity to boost Westminster’s morale. Junior Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) put the game on ice as she would knock down six free throws in thirty seconds to give the Titans a 57-48 lead with six seconds left.

Murrio lead the Titans with a game-best 20 points to go with six rebounds and two steals. Hergenrother registered a career-high eight made field goals, finishing with 17 points and a game-high four assists, while also notching game- and career-bests in blocks (2). Bell recorded a double-double, 13 points and 11 boards.

Westminster shot 27% (17-63) from the field, 16.7% (3-18) from beyond the arc, and 83% (20-23) from the free throw line.

The Titans are back on the court Saturday, November 20 as they travel to Wooster, Ohio to compete against Carnegie Mellon in day one of the Tip-Off at The College of Wooster. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
