JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) — The closing of a landmark hot dog shop in western Pennsylvania has taken its customers and employees by surprise.Sam and Peter Contacos are the most recent owners of Coney Island Lunch, which has been in business in one form or another for 101 years in Johnstown.

Workers say they closed up like normal Saturday night only to see a sign posted Sunday saying the business was closed and thanking “customers for many years of patronage.”

Employee Brenda Shaffer told The (Johnstown) Tribune-Democrat that Peter Contacos, who managed the business for his father, is “packing up and moving to Texas. He’s made that well known to everybody.”

But Shaffer was still surprised by the closing. She said a text message from Peter Contacos telling her the business was closed arrived after she was given a “work schedule for next week” before she left Saturday night.
