GREENVILLE, Pa. (Titan Athletics)– The Westminster College men’s basketball team defeated Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Thiel College, 82-69, on the road Sunday afternoon.
 
Thiel (2-6, 0-1 PAC) led, 11-5, through the first six minutes of play in the first half. Westminster (4-4, 2-0 PAC) scored six-straight points to tie the game at 11, and after a Tomcat free throw, took the lead (13-12) courtesy of a made layup from sophomore Josh Hutcherson (Uniontown, OH / Uniontown Lake) with 8:43 left in the first. Thiel regained the lead (19-17) but Titan sophomore Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) converted a pair of free throws to tie it at 19 all. Westminster outscored the Tomcats 13-6 in the remaining six minutes of the first half to lead, 32-25, at halftime.
 
The Titans opened the second half on a 5-0 run and led 37-25. Thiel cut the lead to single digits (44-35), however, Westminster quickly gained the double digit lead back (46-35) after a made layup from sophomore Anthony Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range). The Titans led by as much as 23 (64-41) at the 10:39 mark. Westminster led, 67-47, with 8:14 to go, however, Thiel rattled off 10-straight points to get within 10 (67-57) with 3:43 left in regulation. The Tomcats cut the lead to single digits (69-61) for the first time since the 15:33 mark of the second half, but the Titans kept Thiel at bay, winning by 13 points (82-69).
 
Junior Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) led all players on the glass with a career-high 13 rebounds. Payne also added 11 points. Senior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) and A. Ritter each tied a team-high with 13 points. Armwood was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and tied a team-best with two steals. Junior Dylan O’Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) tallied 10 points, his fifth-straight double-digit point contest. O’Hara also recorded five rebounds. Junior Lloyd Chatman (Columbus, OH / Reynoldsburg) had nine points and pulled down five boards.
 
Thiel outshot Westminster 46.4% (26-56) to 38.5% (25-65). The Titans outrebounded the Tomcats 45-33.
 
Westminster is back in action at home Wednesday, December 5 against PAC opponent Waynesburg University. Start time is set for 8 p.m.
