HAMPTON, Va. – The Westminster College men’s lacrosse team fell, 11-5, to Division I Hampton University on Monday afternoon.
Hampton (1-3) scored first at the 9:54 mark in the first quarter. Westminster (0-2) answered with a goal by sophomore Dante Serra (Center Valley, PA / Southern Lehigh) to tie the game at one. After a Pirate goal with 3:41 to play (2-1), freshman Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) knotted the game up at two with his first collegiate goal. The Pirates led, 3-2, at the end of one. Junior Ryan Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park) scored with 2:53 left in the second quarter to cut Hampton’s lead to 6-3, and the score would stay the same at half.
With 15 seconds left to play in the third quarter, sophomore Adrian Culp (Gaithersburg, MD / Quince Orchard) scored from a pass by Serra to shorten the Pirate lead to three (7-4). Sophomore Tyler Nordby (Burnt Hills, NY / Burnt Hills) netted a goal with 7:15 left to play in the game to get within two goals (7-5) of Hampton. The Pirates, however, scored four unanswered goals to win the game 11-5.
Serra led the Titans in shots with six, while Fisher tallied four. Serra and Fisher had four and two shots on goal, respectively. Freshman Romano Veneziano (Pittsburgh, PA / Pittsburgh Online Academy) and sophomore Steven Knight (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) each had a team-best four ground balls. Junior Carter Hall (Zeeland, MI / Zeeland West) recorded 20 saves on the afternoon.
Westminster is back in action Saturday, March 10 at home against Earlham College. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
