DEFIANCE, Ohio (Titan Athletics) – The Westminster College men’s soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Defiance College on the road, 4-1, in the last day of the Purple and Gold Classic hosted by Defiance College Sunday afternoon.
Westminster (2-0) freshman Sam Accordino (Canfield, OH / Canfield) started the scoring for the Titans, recording his second goal of the season in as many days at the 19:17 mark of the first half. Just over one minute later, senior Shane Fallen (Blue Bell, PA / Wissahickon) received a pass from junior Ahmed Cisse (Germantown, MD / Clarksburg) and connected with the back of the net, giving the Titans a 2-0 cushion. Later in the first (26:45), sophomore Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) found junior Peter Mattocks (Saegertown, PA / Saegertown) to widen the Titan lead 3-0. The Titans would hold the same lead going into halftime.
At the 69:12 mark of the second half, Defiance (1-1) scored its first goal to reduce the Titan lead 3-1. With just 26 seconds left in regulation (89:34), Mattocks added his second goal of the game and fourth of the season to seal the Westminster victory 4-1.
Mattocks tallied four shots, three shots on goal and two goals. Fallen recorded two shots on goal and a score while Accordino finished with two shots, one shot on goal and a score. Westminster led in shots (17-11) while Defiance led in corner kicks (6-4). Senior goalkeeper AJ Bove (New Stanton, PA / Hempfield Area) recorded five saves in a complete game effort.
Westminster is back on the field Wednesday, September 5 at non-conference opponent Penn State Altoona. Start time is set for 8:15 p.m.
