FREDONIA, N.Y. (Titan Athletics)- The Westminster College men’s soccer team defeated the Fredonia State Blue Devils by a score of 2-1 in the final day of the Blue Devil Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Titans’ record improved to 2-2, while the Blue Devils’ were handed their first loss, dropping to 1-1-2.
The Blue Devils struck first with a goal in the 35th minute off a penalty kick to give them a 1-0 lead. Fredonia State outshot the Titans 8-4 in the first half, but senior goalkeeper Ezra Cimino (Brookline, MA / Waldorf) collected four saves to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Fredonia State heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Titans wasted no time as junior Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) scored just three minutes into the half to knot the score up at 1-1. Westminster broke the tie in the 78th minute when sophomore Noah Weiss (South Park, PA / South Park) notched his first goal of the season to give the Titans a 2-1 lead. Despite pressure from the Blue Devils’ attack in the closing minutes, Westminster hung on for its first come-from-behind victory of the 2019 season.
Cimino collected a career-best nine saves en-route to the complete game victory for Westminster.Overall, Westminster finished second in the tournament. Iregui, Cimino, and senior Ahmed Cisse (Germantown, MD / Clarksburg) were named on the All-Tournament Team.
Westminster will return to the pitch on Monday when they travel to Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA to take on Carlow University under the lights. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
