NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.– Westminster Homecoming organizers have pulled the homecoming parade from this falls schedule. The decades-old tradition of a parade marching down New Wilmington’s Market Street has featured floats and bands for generations of students and alumni.
The Alumni Engagement Office says the parade will evolve into a festive celebration on the Quad.
“We acknowledge this is a change but encourage you to support this effort in what we hope will be a new tradition,” Sr. Director of Alumni Engagement Kara Montgomery wrote in a campus-wide email on Monday. “This decision was not made lightly and was a result of a collaborative discussion, including students, that addressed the vitality and quality of the parade balanced with existing resources. As we work through the changes, we ask for your support, attendance, and enthusiasm around this effort and look forward to celebrating Homecoming 2018 with you.”
Montgomery added that the new celebration on the Quad would serve as the site for the traditional homecoming pep rally. Crowds can also greet the homecoming court and Westminster Marching Band while also supporting student-athletes as well as a celebrate the students and returning alumni.
The Alumni Engagement Office announced it will send out our ‘call for content’ on May first. Organizers say they’re seeking ideas about any programs or events alumni or students would hope to host during Homecoming weekend and begin to work on details.
