NEW WILMINGTON Pa. – The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is coming to Westminster College. And thanks to generous donor, students can get free tickets to the October 6th performance. Undergraduates can pick up the free tickets for the concert at Patterson Hall’s Celebrity Series office.

College President Kathy Richardson hopes students will attend.

“I’m excited because I think that not only will our faculty be there, I’ll be there, but our students. We have a friend of the college who’s made in possible for all students to have a free ticket for this performance. So we’re really hoping that students will come out to hear this Bernstein themed concert on October 6th.”

Richardson stated that by having Westminster host the show, it is convenient and accessible to students. The PSO previously performed at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

Conductor Manfred Honeck will conduct the Grammy-winning PSO’s concert on campus. Richarson explains that it is rare for him to conduct off-site performances. She said that she feels it will bring an even higher level of delight to the audience. Richardson is excited to attend she said this is a very big deal and students should take advantage of it.

Honeck is regarded as one of the world’s leading conductors, renowned for his distinctive interpretations and arrangements. He was honored along with the Symphony the 2018 Grammy Award for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Barber’s Adagio for Strings.

The 2018-2019 Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Westminster series opens with “Bernstein in Pittsburgh” on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018. Featuring mezzo soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano, Honeck will lead the orchestra in a centennial celebration of the birth of American composer Leonard Bernstein’s birth. The evening will be filled with pieces Bernstein conducted with the Pittsburgh Symphony early in his career, including works by Beethoven, Haydn and Stravinsky, as well as Bernstein’s own First Symphony, which the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra premiered in 1944.

The Symphony will perform in Westminster’s Orr Auditorium, a 1,700-seat concert hall, where Westminster’s various music ensembles and guest artists from the Celebrity Series regularly perform.
