Matt Duchene and Tanner Jeannot scored in the third period to give the Nashville Predators a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. Juuse Saros made 25 saves for Nashville. Anze Kopitar had the lone goal and Calvin Petersen made 29 saves for Los Angeles. Kopitar has five goals and three assists just three games into the season. And Nashville's Filip Forsberg played his 500th game of his career — all with the Predators.
Lucas Raymond made his first NHL goal a big one for the Detroit Red Wings, breaking a scoreless tie at 6:38 of the third period on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 19-year-old Raymond, from Gothenburg, Sweden, was picked fourth overall by the Red Wings in the 2020 draft. He also assisted on Tyler Bertuzzi’s fifth goal of the season just more than two minutes after beating goalie Joonas Korpisalo, who stopped Detroit’s first 33 shots on net. Boone Jenner made it a one-goal game at 12:51, but Red Wings goalie Thomas Greiss and his defense preserved the lead. Vladislav Namestnikov and Adam Erne added empty-net goals for Detroit.
Baylor’s sideline will look different this season, but the Lady Bears expect similar results after they were picked as the preseason No. 1 team in the Big 12. Coach Kim Mulkey stepped down after last season to take the job at LSU. She led the Lady Bears to three national championships, 12 Big 12 titles and 19 NCAA Tournament appearances in her 21 years on the job. Baylor made the Elite Eight last season. The Lady Bears' new coach is Nicki Collen, who led the WNBA's Atlanta Dream the past three seasons. They bring back Queen Egbo and NaLyssa Smith while adding Jordan Lewis, a transfer from Alabama.
St. Louis Blues winger Pavel Buchnevich has been suspended two games for headbutting Arizona Coyotes forward Lawson Crouse. Buchnevich was thrown out of Monday's game late in the first period Monday. He'll miss the Blues' upcoming games at Vegas and home against Los Angeles. The suspension costs Buchnevich $141,463 because he is a repeat offender. He was suspended one game for high-sticking last season while with the New York Rangers. This is the 26-year-old Russian's first season with St. Louis.
Washington State acting head coach Jake Dickert says his immediate focus in his new role is providing stability for players who were left hurting and shocked after Nick Rolovich and other coaches were fired for refusing to comply with the state’s vaccine mandate. He says he addressed the team during practice to assure players he understands what they’re going through. Athletic director Pat Chun has said Washington State will work to bolster the staff after taking the unusual step of firing a head coach and so many assistants in the middle of a season.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi will make his return to Montreal on Thursday night with his new team, the Carolina Hurricanes. The 21-year-old center signed a one-year, $6.1 million deal in August with Carolina after spending the first part of his career with the Canadiens. Kotkaniemi says it'll be “a blast” to see old teammates. The Hurricanes are looking to turn Kotkaniemi from a center to a winger. He also says he's open to staying with Carolina in the long term.
The New York Giants have placed starting left tackle Andrew Thomas on injured reserve along with wide receiver/kickoff returner C.J. Board. The Giants made the moves on Tuesday after both were hurt on Sunday in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Thomas, the fourth pick overall in 2020, has foot and ankle problems. He missed a game against Dallas the previous week because of a foot injury and sprained an ankle in the 38-11 loss Sunday. Board broke his arm on a kickoff return.
