CLERMONT, Fla. (Titan Athletics)– The Westminster College softball team swept their two games at The Spring Games on Thursday as they won, 8-6, over Keene State College in game one, and, 5-3, over Susquehanna University in the second game.
Keene (2-5) took a 4-0 lead, following three runs in the first and one in the second. Westminster cut Keene’s lead in the third, 4-2, after sophomore Alexis Brinza (McKees Rocks, PA / Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) connected on a two-run double. Sophomore Breanna Tetirick (New Concord, OH / John Glenn) got the Titans within one run of Keene’s lead in the fourth (4-3) as she singled home sophomore Ashley Chorney (Indian Trail, NC / Porter Ridge). The Titans took their first lead of the game in the fifth with three runs. After junior Lauren McNany (Emlenton, PA / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) tied the game (4-4) with an RBI-double, Chorney put Westminster in front with an RBI-single, scoring McNany. First Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) scored the third run for the Titans. Westminster added insurance in the sixth (8-4), courtesy of an RBI-single by each Brinza and Brown. Keene scored twice in the seventh. Brinza, McNany, and Chorney all had a two-hit game, while Brinza and McNany both had a double. Brinza totaled a game-high three RBIs. Brown improved to 2-2 in a complete-game on the mound. Brown gave up six runs on 12 hits, while striking out four.
Susquehanna (5-6) led 2-0 with a pair of runs in the first. The score remained the same through three innings. The Titans’ bats came alive in the fourth, where they scored all of their five runs. Chorney started the offensive spree with an RBI-single, bringing home senior Makena Baumgardner (Summerhill, PA / Forest Hills). Sophomore Leigha Knox (Aliquippa, PA / Central Valley) scored the tying run (first-year Alexandra Pfab (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley)) with a ground out. Sophomore Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) gave the Titans their first lead (4-2) with a two-out two-run single, scoring first-year Jasmine Woodings (Verona, PA / Penn Hills) and Chorney. Brinza scored Bedalota with a grounder and Westminster led 5-2. Susquehanna scored its last run in the fourth. First-year pitcher Krystyna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) improved to 3-1 on the year, after giving up three runs on six hits and striking out a season-high six and walking none. Tetirick had the lone extra-base hit of the game with her second double on the year.
The Titans (5-3) will close out their Florida trip on Friday, March 15 against Kean University (9 AM) and Husson University (11:15 AM).
