The Westminster College Men’s and Women’s soccer teams are off to a great start this season. The women’s team currently has an overall record of 4-2, then men’s 5-2. Both teams are led under the coaching of 21 year veteran, Girish Thakar. This year, Thakar reached a milestone of 200 wins for the men and 200 wins for the women.
Thakar has been the head coach for the men’s team since 1998. At that point, he was also the track coach. In 2002, he was asked to step in as interim coach for the women’s program and the following year accepted the position full time.
Both programs have been to multiple conference championships and NCAA Division III National tournaments. The most recent was in 2015, when the men beat Geneva College in the President Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship. However, he really doesn’t have a favorite or most memorable moment.
“We’ve been really fortunate to play some really good teams, like teams that were ranked top five in the country and regardless how the results ended up whether we won or not, I thought that was a great compliment to the program(s) to play against that competition,” Thakar explained.
Both teams are looking for another PAC championship win this season. Thakar tells his players that anything can happen. They should take every game a day at a time and that is where they will find success.
