Last-place Sheffield United defied the 57th-minute sending-off of Phil Jagielka to beat lackluster Aston Villa 1-0 in what is likely to prove only a consolation victory on its way out of the Premier League. Leading 1-0 thanks to David McGoldrick’s close-range strike in the 30th minute, United was reduced to 10 men when Jagielka brought down Anwar El Ghazi as the Villa winger charged toward the penalty box. A yellow card was initially awarded to Jagielka but that changed that to a red after the referee was advised by VAR to look at the incident again on the pitchside monitor
Sam Darnold’s time as the face of the New York Jets franchise might be nearing a disappointing end. The 23-year-old quarterback was considered an untouchable player on the roster only a year ago. General manager Joe Douglas has backed off that stance and it could signal a major change at the position as free agency and the NFL draft approach. Douglas says he will answer a call from teams if they inquire about Darnold. Douglas’ comments during a video call were the first time the GM directly acknowledged being willing to trade Darnold. Douglas remained complimentary of Darnold but made it clear the team is exploring its options.

His sights are firmly focused on helping the Buffaloes make the NCAA Tournament and go on a deep run.
Leicester’s bid to secure Champions League qualification has received a further setback after only managing a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League. Brendan Rodgers’ injury-hit team recovered from conceding a fourth-minute goal to Matěj Vydra, with Kelechi Iheanacho’s volley in the 34th earning a point at Turf Moor. However, more dropped points — coming three days after a 3-1 loss to Arsenal — further opens the door for Leicester’s top-four rivals with around a quarter of the season left. Leicester is third, five points ahead West Ham and six clear of fifth-place Chelsea having played a game more.

Houston Astros left-hander Framber Valdéz has a fractured left ring finger, an injury that could deal another blow to the team’s banged-up starting rotation. The 27-year-old was hurt Tuesday on the fifth pitch of his spring training debut on a one-hopper off the bat of the New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor. Valdéz stayed in the game and finished two innings. General manager James Click says an X-ray afterward revealed the injury. Dougherty has long been a major political player in Pennsylvania, steering more than $30 million raised by the local electricians union to mostly Democratic candidates. Defense lawyer Hank Hockheimer says he is “surprised and disappointed” that Dougherty was arrested at home Wednesday while caring for his ill wife. The 2019 indictment accuses Dougherty of keeping Councilman Bobby Henon on the union payroll to push his agenda at City Hall.
Washington will not have cheerleaders for the first time since the NFL's longest-running cheerleading team was founded in 1962. Washington will instead have a coed dance team in 2021 as it continues an organizational rebranding effort. Former Laker Girl manager Petra Pope was hired as an adviser to use her three decades of NBA experience to revamp the group. The organization had come under fire for allegations of employees making inappropriate videos from calendar photo shoots. Members of the 2008 and 2010 cheerleading teams reached a confidential settlement, according to lawyers on each side. That settlement is unrelated to this decision.

The men’s professional tennis tour is increasing prize money at smaller tournaments that had 50% cuts during the coronavirus pandemic and is changing its “frozen” rankings with the aim of restoring the traditional 52-week system by August 2022. The ATP also said some players will be allowed to bring more than two team members to tournaments now. Payouts to players will be brought back to 80% of pre-pandemic levels at ATP 250 tournaments and 60% at ATP 500 tournaments until Wimbledon in June. That mostly will be funded by taking money out of a bonus pool distributed at season's end.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is ready to mark one year of fighting the coronavirus pandemic. It was 12 months ago Wednesday that he laid down strict attendance limits on the annual Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, which brings thousands of people to the capital city. At the time Ohio didn't have a single reported case of COVID-19. That and DeWine's subsequent order to close schools won him early praise for aggressive action to fight the coronavirus. But the good mood didn't last long and now the Republican governor finds himself fending off sharp criticism from a conservative party flank and facing the possibility of a primary next year.
