ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) — Police say a bullet fired by a law enforcement officer struck and killed a jail guard who was struggling with an inmate at a Pennsylvania courthouse.

Authorities say the inmate had been taken from the Blair County jail to Central Court in Altoona for a hearing Wednesday when he disarmed corrections officer Rhonda Jean Russell. Authorities say a law enforcement officer in the building opened fire on the inmate to stop him from harming Russell. She was struck by the bullet. The 47-year-old Russell was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Authorities are investigating.
