NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.(Titan Athletics) – The Westminster College men’s soccer team won, 1-0, over Bethany College at home in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament Semifinals Tuesday afternoon.
The second-seeded Titans improved to 13-5 overall, their most wins since the 2008 season (17-6). The third-seeded Bison finished the season 7-9-3. Westminster’s shutout win marked its ninth this year.
Senior Justin Brandt (Ellicott City, MD / Archbishop Spalding) came off the bench and scored the game-winner at the 78:35 mark after receiving a pass from junior Nick Cimini (Mars, PA / Mars Area). Brandt gathered in the cross at the 30-yard line and dribbled the ball to the right post and placed it in the opposite corner for the score. Brandt now has four goals on the year, third on the team. The assist was Cimini’s first of the year.
The physical contest consisted of 14 fouls for each team and seven total cards. Westminster outshot Bethany, 12-10 (including 7-5 on goal). Titan junior Peter Mattocks (Saegertown, PA / Saegertown) registered a game-high three shots-on-goal. The Titans also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Titan senior goalkeeper AJ Bove (New Stanton, PA / Hempfield Area) gathered in five saves in a complete-game effort for his fourth shutout on the season.
The Titans will play the winner of Tuesday’s other Semifinal game between four-seed Washington & Jefferson College and one-seed Grove City College. The two teams play tonight at 8 p.m. at Grove City High School. The title match will be on Saturday, Nov. 3, hosted by the highest remaining seed.
