WASHINGTON, Pa. (Titan Athletics)– The Westminster College women’s soccer team defeated Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College, 3-2, on the road Wednesday evening in the PAC Championship Semifinals.

With the win, Westminster (15-5) advances to the PAC Championship Finals and will play Grove City College on Saturday, November 3 at Grove City High School. Start time is set for 2 p.m.

Titan senior Keely Birsic (North Ridgeville, OH / Elyria Catholic) scored the first goal of the contest early in the first half in the fifth minute. Birsic netted a penalty kick to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. The goal was Birsic’s 11th of the season, which is second in the PAC. In the 36th minute, Washington & Jefferson (9-8-2) answered with a goal from sophomore Marcy Saldivar to tie the game at one. The score would stay the same at halftime. In the second half, junior Kayla Trozzi (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) scored her eighth goal of the year in the 55th minute. First-year Ashley Frank (Mentor, OH / Mentor) found Trozzi in the middle of the field, and Trozzi dribbled left of the goalie to score an open goal and give Westminster a 2-1 lead. Just one minute later (56:44), junior Gabrielle Diamond (Moon Township, PA / Moon) gathered a rebounded shot from Birsic and found the back of the net for her third score of the year, giving Westminster a 3-1 cushion. With 15 minutes left to play, W&J senior Brianna Floryshak scored, cutting into the Titan lead 3-2. Westminster, however, held off W&J’s late push to pull out a 3-2 victory.

Birsic tallied a team-high five shots and tallied three shots on goal. Trozzi registered four shots and three shots on goal, while Diamond had two shots and two shots on goal. The Presidents outshot the Titans 16-11. Westminster edged W&J in corner kicks, 5-3.

The winner of Saturday’s title match will also receive the conference’s automatic qualifying bid to this year’s NCAA Division III Championship.
