GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Westminster College women’s soccer team defeated Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Thiel College, 5-1, on the road Tuesday evening.
Westminster improved its record to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the PAC, while Thiel dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Titan first-year Regan Moorhouse (New Castle, PA / Neshannock) scored the first of five goals for Westminster in the 13th minute. Moorhouse headed the ball in from inside the penalty box off a corner kick from junior Keely Birsic (North Ridgeville, OH / Elyria Catholic). The goal was Moorhouse’s first of her career.
In the 26th minute, Titan first-year Marissa Grande (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) scored off a cross pass from fellow first-year teammate Jocelyn Gillette (Natrona Heights, PA / Highlands). Seven minutes later, first-year Alexandria Applin (Beavercreek Township, OH / Beavercreek) found classmate Jillian Kress (Waterford, PA / Fort Le Boeuf) for a pass and score, giving the Titans a 3-0 lead. The goal marked the first of Kress’s career.
Just minutes before halftime, Applin broke free from the Tomcat defense and scored inside the 18-yard box to give the Titans a 4-0 lead. In the second half, Titan first-year Corrine Larson (Grayslake, IL / Grayslake Central) joined the company of Moorhouse and Kress as she scored her first collegiate goal in the 79th minute. Applin assisted Larson, giving her two assists for the match.
Thiel spoiled the shutout as Marissa Ramirez scored with 30 seconds left in the match.
Titan senior goalkeeper Laura Page (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park) earned the win with two saves in 45 minutes of play. Westminster sophomore Heather Haley (Canfield, OH / Canfield) played the second half at goalie.
Westminster outshot Thiel, 22-4, and led in corner kicks, 8-1.
The Titans’ next match is Saturday, October 14 at home against Saint Vincent College. Start time is set for 8:30 p.m.
